Rules for Domestic Air Travel

Rules for Domestic Air Travel
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) enforces domestic air travel rules, including passenger identification and items carried on your person and inside bags. Rules change to meet ongoing security and safety concerns.

Identification

A boarding pass and government-issued photo ID are required for travel. If accompanying a minor or disabled traveler through screening, you must show a photo ID and an airline-issued security document. Children under 18 aren't required to show identification. Airlines require a boarding pass for children over age 2 and may require a birth certificate to validate unticketed children's ages.

Clothing

No clothing is specifically prohibited. Avoid wearing metal objects and oversized clothing capable of concealing unlawful items.

Carry-on luggage

Carry-on luggage should measure approximately 24 by 16 by 10 inches.

Carry-on Liquids

Liquids must be removed from bags and meet a 3-1-1 format: 3.4 ounce bottle or less placed in a 1 quart-sized clear zip-top plastic bag, one per passenger. Some exceptions are allowed. Larger-sized liquids go in checked baggage.

Electronics

Remove oversized electronics from bags before screening. Laptops can remain in certain types of bags.

Animals

Rules for transporting animals are dictated by federal and state laws. Airlines also have their own policies.
