Abilene, Texas, is located in the central part of the state directly off of Interstate 20. Abilene provides visitors with many outdoor activities and opportunities to view wildlife. Visitors can also explore local history through museums and historical villages.

Outdoor Activities

Abilene has several parks and places to explore the outdoors. Abilene State Park has many opportunities for visitors to go camping, hiking, swimming and fishing. Abilene Lake provides opportunities for fishing and hiking as well.

Wildlife

If you're into birdwatching, you can find opportunities for that at Abilene Lake and Cedar Gap Farm. The Abilene Zoo in Nelson Park houses more than 500 animals.

Accommodations

The majority of Abilene's accommodations cluster near the southwest border of the city. In addition to hotels, visitors can camp about an hour south of the city at Abilene State Park.

When to Visit

Abilene has an average annual temperature of 64.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Abilene's cold winters and hot summers make spring and fall the best time for outdoor activities.

Abilene was founded in 1881 and named after Abilene, Kansas.
