Early Research
In 1934, Emil W. Haury formally described the cliff dwellings for the first time and began research on the buildings' age by gathering tree ring samples.
Age
According to archaeologist Richard C. Lange, most of the cliff dwellings date to the late 1200s and early 1300s.
Layout
The cliff dwellings of Pueblo Canyon look like an ancient apartment complex, clustered into three main groups and built along the side of the canyon.
Materials
The dwellings were made from rock and mud, materials easy to come by in the Sierra Ancha wilderness.
Occupants
Pueblo Canyon was occupied by Native Americans known today as the Anchans. This culture inhabited the canyons for a brief time, returning to flatter terrain after a period of about 50 years.
