Transportation
Taking cabs everywhere can quickly eat up a budget. The cheapest way to travel in New York is by using the subway. Unlimited-ride passes are $8.25 per day, including buses (as of September 2009).
Accommodations
The Chelsea Savoy Hotel on West 23rd Street offers guests private baths, close proximity to the subway and 24-hour front desk staff. Cheap rooms can also be found at the New Yorker Hotel in west midtown, the Milburn on the upper west side and the Larchmont Hotel in the west village.
Sightseeing
Instead of spending your well-earned money to tour various places, enjoy the scenery and take pictures from the outside for free. The Staten Island Ferry is free, and the 25-minute ride gives guests a beautiful view of the New York Harbor as well as the Statue of Liberty.
Free Tour Guide
Big Apple Greeter is a non-profit organization that pairs visitors with a native New Yorker for a tour of the city like no other. Having a personal tour guide is a great way to see the sights, and the service is completely free (see Resources).
Central Park
Central Park is 843 acres filled with water, woodlands and lawns in the middle of Manhattan. Visitors can enjoy a picnic, walk the park and view popular film sites at the park for free. There is also the Central Park Zoo, 21 different playgrounds and a carousel.
