Coral Bay History

Coral Bay History
Coral Bay is a small Australian resort town located south of Exmouth. It is adjacent to the Ningaloo Reef, Australia's only fringing reef, where the coral lies right at the edge of the water. Coral Bay offers excellent snorkeling and coral-viewing expeditions. It is popular for its warm water and white, clean beach.

Early History

The schooner Maud landed here in 1884, and this is the first recording of Europeans in the area. In 1915 the town was named Maud's Landing.

Maud's Landing

Maud's Landing was an important part of the settlement and development of Western Australia. A jetty allowed supplies to be brought in, and wool and sheep to be exported.

Bill's Bay

Immediately south of Maud's Landing is Bill's Bay. It was named after Ruby May French, the wife of a local property owner, whose affectionate nickname was Auntie Billie.

Coral Bay Hotel

In 1968, a hotel was built in Bill's Bay. Its name, Coral Bay, was undoubtedly chosen because of the beautiful coral reef outside its windows. From that time on, the settlement was called Coral Bay.

Ningaloo Marine Park

The Ningaloo Marine Park was created in 1987 in an effort to protect the reef. Its waters feature 170 hard corals, 11 soft corals, 475 different species of fish, and even whales, green turtles and dolphins.
