Located on Mount Desert Island in the Downeast region of Maine, Bar Harbor is a favorite travel destination for outdoor enthusiasts because of its close proximity to Acadia National Park. The 40,000 acres of Acadia offer visitors rock climbing, hiking, biking and much more. If you plan a trip to Acadia National Park you most likely will stay in the small fishing and shipbuilding village of Bar Harbor.

Bar Harbor has a number of hotels for all budgets and is well-known for its bed and breakfasts, but if you choose to rough it, there are a nice assortment of campsites available.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be in heaven when they visit Bar Harbor. Visitors can enjoy biking, hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and guided nature tours at Acadia National Park.

Bar Harbor offers different types of restaurants for various budgets, but first-time visitors are encouraged to head to one of the many seafood restaurants to enjoy fresh Maine lobster.

Transportation

Bar Harbor is accessible by car, but many people choose to visit by boat or ferry. If you fly commercially, the closest large airport is Bangor International, which is located approximately 50 miles from Bar Harbor.

Shopping

Check for new gear at one of Bar Harbor's many outdoor outfitters. The town also offers many galleries, specialty shops and distinctive local treasures.
