Assisi Car Rentals

Assisi Car Rentals
Less expensive than traveling by train, Italian car rentals provide good deals for travelers wishing to explore the countryside with freedom from the main roads and train timetables.

Driving Regulations

Tourists from non-European Union countries may drive for up to three months with licenses from their native countries so long as the licenses qualify as International Driving Permits. For stays longer than three months, apply for a temporary Italian driver's license.

Finding a Car

Travelers seeking car rentals near Assisi will need to look to the nearest city. Perugia and the Saint Egidio-Perugia Airport offer the best local deals for renting a car near Assisi, and offer competitive rates on websites such as CarRentals.com or CarHire3000.com (see Resources).

Perugia City Center

Car rental choices within Perugia are limited, and are primarily offered by Hertz Car Rental located at 4 P.Le V.Veneto. Weekly rates for economy cars begin at 276 euros, including taxes, while compacts start at 406 euros (as of 2009).

Saint Egidio-Perugia Airport

Possibly the most convenient option for travelers arriving and leaving via airport, Saint Egidio (PEG) offers Hertz car rentals starting at 289 euros per week for economy-class cars and 383 for compact cars. You can lower your fees by specifying that you'll return the car at the same location.

Things to Remember

Drivers unfamiliar with European roads or the Italian round-about can expect some initial confusion as they begin driving. To minimize frustration, read up on Italian driving regulations before leaving and invest in an up-to-date road map (see Resources).
