New Passport Information
Applying for a United States passport is quite simple if you follow the steps below. It can take up to 10 weeks for you to receive your new passport, so it's a good idea to plan ahead and put in your passport application well in advance of your travel plans.

Applications are submitted at either a Passport Agency or a special Acceptance Facility, and you must be physically present when you apply (see Resources).

Application Locations

Arrange for your appointment at either the Acceptance Facility of Passport Agency. Acceptance Facilities are often U.S. Post Offices (see Resources).

Form

The passport application form is referred to as DS-11, Application for U.S. Passport. You can fill it out online, print it out at home and take it with you to your appointment.

Appointment

Bring a completed form DS-11, proof of citizenship (such as a certified birth certificate), two 2-by-2-inch photos, and ID such as a driver's license, military ID or naturalization certificate to your appointment.

Fees

The fees, as of 2009, are $100 for adults (includes a $25 Execution fee), $120 for the adult Passport Plus card (includes $25 Execution fee) and $45 for the adult Passport Card.
