About Air Miles

About Air Miles
Before you book your next flight, you may want to make it more rewarding for yourself by signing up for an air-mile rewards program, also known as a frequent-flier program. Airlines offer these programs to reward their loyal customers with perks and discounts.

Earning Air Miles

You can earn air miles by buying one-way or round-trip airline tickets. Airlines also offer credit cards, which reward your purchases with air miles.

Redeeming Air Miles

You can redeem air miles for free tickets once you have earned the number of miles that the airline requires. You can also use miles for upgrades from standard seating to first class.

Death and Divorce

If you get divorced, your air miles are considered a commodity and can be split as part of the divorce agreement. You may leave your air miles to your next of kin in a will.

History

American Airlines was the first airline to offer a passenger reward program. It rolled out its AAdvantage program in the early 1980s.

Cost of Air Miles

You can use a program called Flying Fish to help determine the cost of the air miles that you earn. You can use it to compare different airline air-mile programs on a cost-per-reward-mile basis.
