Turkey is a land with a history spanning 10,000 years. Its diverse culture was formed from 13 successive civilizations, and the desire to merge traditional religious and historical values with today's modern and Western culture. Turkey possesses an ideal climate from May to October, with 1,000 miles of shoreline along the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, and mostly undeveloped forests and mountains.

Visas are required and can be purchased at entry points or through the Turkish Consulate. Turkish currency is limited to $5,000 on entry or exit. Conservative clothing--especially for women--is encouraged in rural areas.

Geography

Turkey is located at the northeast end of the Mediterranean Sea, with the Black Sea to the north and Aegean Sea to the West. Surrounded by water and mountains, the center of Turkey is a treeless plateau.

Istanbul

Istanbul, founded in 667 B.C. as Byzantium, was also known as Constantinople. The former capital of three empires, Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans two continents, with two bridges over the Bosphorus Strait connecting the continents of Europe and Asia.

Long Distance Trekking Routes

Lycian Way and St. Paul Trail are approximately 500 km long trails. The St. Paul Trail is a challenging walk which partially follows the route walked by St. Paul on his first missionary trip in Asia Minor/Turkey. The Lycian Way follows the coast of Lycia from Fethiye to Antalya. In the Kackar Mountains--located in the far northeast corner of Turkey--short and long range trails offer scenic views of the Black Sea.
