History
Opened as a prison in 1934, Alcatraz became home to some of that era's most notorious criminals, and the site of history's most enduring escape. Today, it is a popular tourist destination for Bay Area visitors and history buffs around the world.
Tours
Tours of San Francisco and Alcatraz are available year-round. Packages can be purchased to include Alcatraz or Angel Island, nearby wineries and other tourist locations.
Early Bird Tours
This tour departs from Pier 33 at 9 a.m. and is normally the least crowded. Cost is $26 per person and includes an audio tour. Runs daily and is offered year-round.
Night Tour
The Night Tour includes a personally narrated boat tour around the island as well as a guided tour of the main building. It also offers special presentations about prison life at Alcatraz.
Alcatraz and Angel Island
A combined tour gives visitors a look at the Bay's most popular islands. Includes Ferry trip to and from Angel Island, narrated tours of both locations and an audio tour of Alcatraz
Tips
Bring photo identification for all travelers. Weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers and bring a light jacket or sweater.
