What Are the Different Islands in Hawaii?
Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States and is located in the Pacific Ocean. Many visitors flock to these islands every year to soak in the sun and ride the waves. Hawaii is made up of hundreds of islands that cover more than 1,500 miles. There are eight main islands--Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Kaho'olawe and Niihau.

Oahu

Oahu is the largest populated island of the Hawaiian Islands, which may be why they nicknamed it The Gathering Place. Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, is located on Oahu, and attracts the most tourists of all the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii

Hawaii, better known as The Big Island, is the largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. The Big Island is most famous for its volcanoes that have been erupting for more than two decades.

Kauai

Kauai, the oldest and one of the most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands, is nicknamed The Garden Isle and has been featured in many TV shows and movies, including "Jurassic Park."

Maui

Maui, known as The Valley Isle, is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Popular attractions on Maui are the Haleakala National Park, Hana Highway and Lahaina.

Lanai

Lanai is called The Pineapple Isle because of its history of being an island-wide pineapple plantation. Lanai has two hotels and four-wheel drive vehicles are required to visit all other attractions.

Molokai, Kaho'olawe and Niihau

Molokai is known as The Friendly Isle, because of the visitor friendly culture. Molokai has the largest fringing reef in the United States on its south shore. Kaho'olawe, referred to as The Target Isle, was used during World War II as a training ground and bombing ground. This island has no permanent residents, mostly due to its lack of freshwater. Niihau was purchased in 1864 by the Robinson family and has been privately owned since then. Niihau is known as The Forbidden Isle because it is off-limits to all but relatives of the owners, government officials, United States Navy and invited guests.
