Features
This tape-based recording format uses small tape cassettes, called miniDVs. The cassettes can record 60 or 80 minutes in standard record mode and 90 or 120 in extended mode.
Compression
DV uses an intraframe lossy compression but still maintains excellent resolution.
Audio
DV can record two channels of 16-bit audio at a 48 kHz sample rate or four channels of 12-bit audio at 32 kHz.
Resolution
DV records in high resolution. The official spec is 720x480, 4:1:1 in NTSC format. This equates to approximately 520 lines of resolution. In comparison, a DVD only shows 480 lines of resolution.
HDV
HDV (high-definition video) uses the same size tape cartridge but records in a high-definition resolution of either 720P or 1080i.
