The American Hiking Society (AHS) was formed in 1966 and serves as the only national organization dedicated to serving hikers and protecting hiking trails. As the national voice for America's hikers, American Hiking Society promotes and protects foot trails and the hiking experience. The American Hiking Society also started National Trails Day, which is a celebration that brings together thousands of outdoor enthusiasts to participate in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops, and trail work projects on the first Saturday of June.
