Alabama Outdoors - Alabama Outdoor Recreation
Alabama may not be the first place that comes to mind when
you think of outdoor recreation, but upon
further inspection Alabama contains enough outdoor opportunities to keep you busy for years. With
several separate geographic regions served by the local cities of
Huntsville,
Birmingham, Montgomeryand
Mobile,
Alabama has great destinations from border to border guaranteed to keep any outdoor enthusiast happy.
The northern regions of the state contain the southern ranges of the famous
Appalachian Mountains. Near Huntsville there is plenty of
good mountain biking and
hiking on trails
like Monte Sano State Park,
Mountain Mist Trail, and
McKay Hollow Trail. In the central region of
Alabama there are a plethora of great activities
surrounding the city of Anniston, wonderful
trails like Chinnabee Silent Trail,
Odum Scout Trail, and
the Pinhoti Trail. Further south, easily accessible
from Mobile, is the Gulf Shores region of Alabama.
Most people don't even know that Alabama has a beach, but Gulf Shores will surprise you. There is mile
after mile of pure white sand and gentle waves. You can go jet skiing, parasailing, sun-bathing, hiking,
and swimming; it's a truly world-class beach experience.
Away from the coast, Alabama is well-known for is fresh water. The state is covered with unbelievable streams,
rivers, and lakes. There are tons of opportunities for fishing, boating, whitewater paddling & kayaking,
and canoeing on over
1000 miles of inland waterways. Enjoy a paddle trip along the
West Fork of the Choctawhatchee River, and if you come in autumn you'll see a display of fall colors that rivals New England.
