What Are Camper Covers?

What Are Camper Covers?
A camper cover is a protective material used to protect truck campers from moisture, scratches, freezing temperatures, and other elements. The material used, its thickness, the size of the cover, and its usefulness will vary depending on where you purchase your camper cover and what the manufacturer's requirements are.

Significance

The main purpose of the cover is to protect your camper from the elements. Covers provide some protection against some extreme weather, particularly freezing temperatures and heavy amounts of precipitation. A camper cover will also protect your camper from small damage that can occur from objects hitting its exterior. A cover, if correctly chosen, protects your camper from small pests and rodents that may try to chew through your camper's wall.

Function

A camper cover is usually used when the camper is off of your vehicle, because a cover can quickly become a road hazard if it flies off during a drive. You should put on the cover on before the first freeze hits to avoid cracking pipes or trapping cold air in the camper. A camper cover should fit snugly over your camper and all the straps and rigging should be securely fastened.

Types

Camper covers come in a variety of materials and sizes. Some companies, such as CalMark, provide breathable fabrics with high strength nylon attached (see reference 1). Other companies, such as Classic Accessories, use a polypropylene-based fabric that offers higher water resistance (see reference 2). Your choice should be based on your location and your own requirements. Areas with higher rainfall require a water-proof cover, whereas sunnier regions may be fine with a fabric to protect from color bleaching.

Considerations

Warranties should be considered when you are in the market for a cover. Some warranties can extend up to three years, while others only cover six months. Pay attention to these to ensure that you won't have to fork out for repairs if the cover rips. Also remember that a camper cover should fit snugly. Don't settle for a larger size just because the one you need is out of stock; rather, order it in and be patient---it's worth it.

Misconceptions

Camper covers will not protect your camper from damage caused by extremely heavy or rough objects, or by some types of extreme weather. Camper covers can usually not be left on while driving unless specifically intended for that use.
